The River Hamble empties into the Southampton Water at Hamble-le-Rice which has long been famous as a yachting centre. Once a year, members of the Royal Southern Yacht Club at Hamble and the Island Sailing Club on the Isle of Wight take part in one of Britain’s strangest events – a cricket match played in the middle of the Solent! for about one hour each year the Brambles sandbank appears in the Solent, about halfway between Southampton and the Isle of Wight. The two teams head out to the sandbank, many dressed appropriately in cricket whites, and play a quick game of cricket before the sea reclaims the pitch. Both teams then adjourn to the Isle of Wight for a celebratory dinner.
