I have always been fascinated with Hampshire’s history – here are some Hampshire dialect words and phrases that you may not have heard of before, and could try and work into your conversation today!

 

Ackled – not working properly, as in ‘it doesn’t ackle’

Cackleberries – eggs

Feeling lear – feeling hungry

Foisty – damp or musty

Gallibagger – scarecrow

Lairy or Lair – cheeky, rude or aggressive

Not too dusty – when something is okay, acceptable

Puggled – confused or daft, as when someone does something silly

Sherricking – a good telling off

Shrammed – cold, shivery, frozen through

Skait or Skate – sailor

Squinny – complain, used as a verb as in ‘don’t squinny’

Winty – weather that is a bit windy or wintery
