This weekend sees the annual ‘War on the Line’ event taking place on the Watercress Line (or Mid Hants Railway as its also known). The event takes place in and around all 3 stations on the line, the market towns of Alton and Alresford and the village of Ropley mid way between the two.
The idea behind the event originally was to educate the next generation about life during World War II using the railway as a living history setting. Over the years the event has grown and now appeals to visitors and enthusiasts alike. There are military and civilian re-enactors dashing around, military and period vehicles on display and driving between locations. There is plenty of information about life on the home front, and what it was like on the railways at the time. Doors and windows are sandbagged and the bomb disposal hard at work. There is live music, demonstrations and air displays from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. This year sees a hurricane and a spitfire in our skies.
